Thinking About Botox?

By Alina H. Winamaker

To smooth away the frown lines between the eyebrows that both men and women get in middle age, and for other facial wrinkles, Botox can be used under prescription. It is most often used in order to smooth out lines. Most people have this type of cosmetic improvement because they feel the lines on their forehead make them look tired or even angry.

You should not consider this treatment if you have an allergy to any of the ingredients of Botox. You shouldn't go ahead if there is an infection in the skin surrounding the area being injected - as common sense dictates. If you have any issues that affect your breathing such as asthma, you also should inform your physician before a treatment.

How does it work?

Usually, wrinkles in the skin form beside a muscle that is close to it, normally beneath it.Botox injected into those muscles restricts nerve impulses going to the tissue that is causing the wrinkle. So, little muscle movement results in the skin supported by the muscle stopping being creased by constant expression contractions. Lines and wrinkles stop forming when muscle contractions are inhibited. As a result, frown lines and other wrinkles are reduced, giving the person a more youthful look.

Using Botox injections for wrinkles is non invasive and the procedure is usually carried out in approximately 20-30 minutes. The practitioner injects a small amount of Botox into the site to be treated. As the Botox starts working, it blocks the nerve signals to the muscles under the skin. The muscle therefore relaxes and the skin is smoothed, causing facial lines to diminish.

The Botox Injection Treatment may leave the skin a bit red and sore, but this is usually very minor and will reduce after a few days. A patient can usually return to work the same day, right after leaving the clinic. Within 3 days the treatment usually starts to work, but the full effect may take up to a week.

Post-Treatment

The first thing you need to do following your procedure is to try to exercise your treated muscles for one to two hours. You should practice squinting, frowning and raising your eyebrows. This helps work the Botox into your muscles. While this can help, it won't impact your results negatively if you forget or don't have the time to do it.

Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas and, for 4 hours after the treatment, do not do yoga, heavy lifting or any type of strenuous exercise. Also, don't take Advil, vitamin D, or Tylenol after the procedure.

If you see some tiny bumps or marks on your face after the procedure, do not be concerned. They will go away within a few hours.

If you choose to have a Botox treatment, be sure your practitioner is specifically trained in this procedure. These treatments must be viewed as the medical procedures they are.
